RuPaul Hen Party Dance Class Brighton

Few cities take a RuPaul hen party dance class in Brighton as seriously as this one does, and it shows: runway walks along the length of the room, lip-sync faces held far too long, and posing treated as a technical skill rather than a joke. It's an unofficial tribute to the drag-competition world, choreographed fresh each time — your instructor writes their own material and tailors it to whoever is standing there. £175 plus the venue, one fee, one group.

Give the form a date and a rough headcount and that's the hard part done. Who lip-syncs, who walks first, how camp the whole thing gets — none of that needs deciding now, or indeed before the music starts. A real person answers the same day, confirming whether we're free, which room you'd get and what the whole thing costs.

Where it happens

Take your pick of four hired rooms, or keep it at the hen house.

  • North Road, BN1 1YDHired North Laine room, close to the station and the Lanes

The right city for it, obviously.

Walk, pose, commit

Three things carry this theme and none of them require you to be a dancer. The first is the walk — long, unhurried, chin up, arriving somewhere. The second is the pose that ends it, held a full beat past comfortable. The third is the lip-sync, which is really just acting with your whole face while your feet do something simple. Put those together and even a party of self-declared non-dancers looks alarmingly good by the last run-through, because the effect comes from conviction rather than technique. Kemptown didn't build this reputation by being shy about it, and a room full of hens who have spent four seasons shouting at a television already know exactly what they are aiming for.

Written on the day, by your teacher

No two of these classes come out the same. Each instructor choreographs their own material and then reads the room: a party that wants a full-blown lip-sync battle in pairs gets one, a party that would rather stay together in a line and strut gets that instead, and a party that arrives shattered from Friday night gets something kinder. Nothing about the structure is promised in advance and no experience is needed — the steps are deliberately simple so the attitude has room to be the hard part. What the teacher does spend time on is the stuff that actually sells it: where your eyes go, when to stop moving, and how long a pause can run before it becomes funny.

Where it goes afterwards

Groups who love the theatre of it usually move on to Burlesque, and the ones who want the same confidence with harder choreography book Beyoncé next time round. The full list of Brighton hen party themes is worth a scroll if the group is still undecided, and couples who discovered at a hen do dance class that they enjoy being taught often come back for a first-dance lesson before the wedding itself.

–Roughly how it goes

Ninety minutes,
sketched not scheduled.

Warm-up first, then the walk, because everything else sits on top of it and it's funnier than it sounds to practise. Poses get added, then the routine arrives in short blocks with the lip-sync layered over the top once the feet are handled. Whether the room ends up in a face-off, a single unbroken line or something your teacher invents on the spot depends entirely on the party. All of the above is a rough shape rather than a running order — every instructor paces their own class, and nothing here is a fixed timetable.

The walk sounds like nothing until you're doing it in front of fourteen people who are all screaming. By the end my mother-in-law-to-be was serving harder than anyone.

We came to Brighton specifically for this and it was the right call. The teacher pitched it perfectly for a group who mostly can't dance but can absolutely commit to a facial expression, and the last run-through is now the only video anyone watches.

Ten of us, one hour, no regrets. Cheaper than the meal afterwards too.

I'd worried it would be too much for the older half of the party. It wasn't — they were the ones asking for another go at the pose, and the routine was pitched so anyone could join in at their own level.

RuPaul, answered.

What organisers want cleared up before booking this hen party activity.

Is this an official RuPaul thing?+

No, and we'd never claim otherwise — it's a tribute class inspired by the drag-competition world, with no affiliation to the show or anyone in it. What you get is our own choreography built in that spirit.

Do we need drag outfits?+

Only if you want them. We don't supply costumes, wigs, heels or props of any kind, so anything theatrical is yours to bring and yours to keep. Plenty of parties dance in jeans and rely purely on the attitude.

Which songs does it use?+

Big, filthy-chorused pop with a lip-sync ending is the general territory. Which tracks actually get used is your instructor's decision, since they choreograph their own routine — put a request on the form and they'll try to honour it.

Half our group cannot dance at all.+

Ideal, frankly. No experience is needed here more than almost any other theme, because the steps are kept simple on purpose and the performance does the heavy lifting. Everything is taught from zero and repeated until the back row has it.

Can men and non-binary guests join in?+

Everyone on the guest list is welcome, whoever they are. Mixed parties are common and nothing in the class is pitched at one gender. Just give us a headcount that includes them.

What happens to the price if more people come?+

It stays exactly where it is: £175 plus the venue for ninety minutes, or £150 plus the venue for an hour, for the whole party. Twelve extra hens turning up late costs you nothing beyond a slightly busier room.

Whereabouts do you run it?+

Any of the four rooms we hire — Madeira Drive by the seafront, North Road in North Laine a short walk from the station, Mermaid Walk at the Marina, or Montpelier Road at the Hove end. We'll suggest whichever fits your numbers, or bring the class to your hen house anywhere in Sussex.
