Dirty Dancing Hen Party Dance Class Brighton

A Dirty Dancing hen party dance class in Brighton takes the hip-led mambo behind the film and turns it into something a whole group can do together — no partner needed, both feet firmly on the floor, and no lift attempted by anyone. Your instructor choreographs their own version and reshapes it around the hens who turn up, in one of four rooms we hire across town or at your hen house, for a flat £175 plus the venue.

We need a date and a rough headcount, nothing more. Whether the group ends up in pairs or in lines, how much sixties swagger goes on top, and who wants the front — none of that has to be settled now. Somebody will come back within the day with availability, the room and the flat price.

Hips, not heroics

Strip the story away and what's left is Latin social dance with the volume turned up: a mambo weight change, a lot of ribcage, and the confidence to take up space while doing it. That translates unusually well into a dance hen party because the basic step is genuinely simple and the character is where all the fun sits. Ten minutes in, a group that arrived apologising is generally overdoing the shoulders on purpose. We teach it as a group routine rather than in couples, so nobody is left counting heads or partnered with someone they've only just met. If the bride wants a partner section, that can happen — it just isn't the default.

No two teachers do it the same way

Every instructor here writes their own choreography and then adapts it in the room, which is why we describe the theme and never the running order. One might build a long slow section and a fast finish; another might spend the time on styling and keep the steps deliberately spare. Both are correct. Tell us on the form whether the group wants to be pushed or looked after, and that lands with your teacher before the day.

About the lift, and where people go next

We don't do it, don't teach it, and won't promise it — a hired room with a beginner group is not the place for anyone to be thrown into the air, and the routine is written so it never comes up. What people do next tends to split two ways: the ones who loved the Latin end book Salsa, while the ones who came for the soundtrack drift to the 80s. And a fair few couples who first met the idea at a hen do dance class turn up later wanting a first-dance lesson, which is a nice sort of circularity.

–Approximately

Ninety minutes,
give or take.

Hips and spines get loosened first — mambo asks for both and neither cooperates cold. The basic weight change comes next, drilled until it stops feeling like homework, and the routine grows out of that in short repeatable sections. How much styling, character or partner work goes on top is worked out between your teacher and the group while it's happening, and the lift never features. Most parties film a full run near the close. Read all of this as the general shape rather than a fixed timetable — each instructor paces their own class.

Three of us had been dreading being paired off with strangers and it simply never happened — the whole thing ran as one group. Far more relaxed than I'd braced myself for.

My mother-in-law-to-be is seventy-one and did the entire session, and my cousin who dances properly still found it interesting. That is a hard balance to strike with twenty-one people and the teacher managed it without anyone being talked down to.

Filthy music, respectable dancing. Exactly right.

Somebody asked about the lift within the first minute and got a very firm no, which honestly set the tone nicely. Nobody missed it once the routine got going.

Dirty Dancing, answered.

What gets asked before groups commit to this hen party activity.

Can the group try the famous lift from the film?+

No — and we'd rather say so plainly than let anyone hope. Nobody is launched into the air in a hired room full of beginners, so the routine is written without it and the subject simply doesn't arise. Everything stays on the floor.

Do we need partners? Our numbers are odd.+

You don't. The class is taught as a group routine facing the front, so an awkward number is no problem at all. If the party specifically wants a section in pairs, mention it and your teacher can build one in.

Is there a dress code?+

Something you can move your hips in, and shoes that stay on. Denim shorts and a knotted shirt are traditional but entirely optional, and nothing is supplied at our end — we don't stock or lend clothing, shoes or accessories.

What music does it use?+

Late-fifties and sixties soul and mambo, with the obvious eighties ballad rarely far away. The precise tracks belong to your teacher, since every instructor choreographs their own routine, but a request from the bride on the form usually gets honoured.

How suggestive does it actually get?+

Less than the name suggests. It's hip-led and confident rather than explicit, everyone stays upright and clothed, and there's nothing a grandmother would need to leave the room for. Groups can ask for it toned down or pushed up and the teacher will oblige.

We're a big group — does that cost extra?+

Not a penny. Ninety minutes is £175 plus the venue and an hour is £150 plus the venue, for the whole party at whatever size it lands. Bigger numbers mean we hire a bigger room, that's all, and no experience is required from any of them.

Where will the class be held?+

In one of four rooms we hire: Madeira Drive on the seafront, North Road in North Laine near the station, Mermaid Walk at the Marina, or Montpelier Road at the Hove end. Room size follows the guest list, and the choice is signed off together with your booking.
